Battle of New Market Reenactment
- Date:
- May 17-18, 2008
- Time:
- 10 AM to 5 PM each day
- Description:
- “Put the boys in, and may God forgive me for the Order.” With these words, Confederate General John C. Breckinridge
ordered 257 cadets with the Virginia Military Institute into combat during the 1864 battle. This year we reenact the 144th
Anniversary of the Battle of New Market, fought on May 15, 1864. The battle, one of the last Confederate victories in the
Shenandoah Valley, is famous for the participation of the Corps of Cadets from Virginia Military Institute. Some 2,000
Confederate, Union, and civilian reenactors depict the experiences of soldiers from both sides during the war, as well
as those of the “home front.” Tactical battle on Saturday at 2:00 PM; New Market battle on Sunday at 1:30 PM.
