  1. When are elections held?
    Elections are held every two years in May. The next election will be held in May 2008, when four council seats will be up for re-election.

  2. Where is the Town Office located?
    The Town Office is located at 9418 John Sevier Rd., New Market, VA adjacent to the New Market Post Office

  3. What are the office hours?
    Normal operating hours are Monday-Friday, 7:30am – 4:00pm. There are occasions when we offer extended hours, such as when real estate and personal property taxes are due.

  4. Whom do I contact after office hours if I have an emergency?
    Many of our public works staff and police officers carry mobile phones for emergency situations. Please call the Shenandoah Emergency Operations Center (EOC) at 459-6101 and advise them of the circumstances of your emergency and the appropriate personnel will be dispatched.

  6. When/where are council meetings held?
    Regularly scheduled monthly council meetings are held in the Council Chambers of the Arthur L. Hildreth, Jr. Municipal Bldg. located at 9418 John Sevier Rd at 7:30pm on the third Monday of each month. If the meeting date falls on a holiday, the meetings are moved to the following Tuesday night.

    Town council meetings are open to the public.

  8. How/where may I make payments to the Town?
    All payments may be mailed to PO Box 58, New Market VA 22844, paid at the Town Office at 9418 John Sevier Rd., or placed in the drop box to the right of the Town Office entrance. In addition, Water/Sewer Utility bills may be paid at BB&T Bank and Suntrust Bank, in New Market.

    We accept cash, checks, money orders, credit cards and debit cards. The credit cards we currently accept are VISA, MasterCard, & Discover.

  11. How does one place an article in the newsletter?
    Because the Town publishes the newsletter, priority is given to town government news. However, often there is additional space available for community notes and activities. If you would like to submit an article for consideration, please contact Debbie Ritchie, Town Clerk at 540-740-3432.

  12. What are the Town requirements for holding a yard sale?
    The Town of New Market permits its residents to hold yard sales in residential districts with the following requirements:
    1. All individuals conducting the sale must obtain a permit from the Town Office prior to the sale. (Permit is free.)
    2. A household is allowed two (2) yard sales per year.
    3. Each sale may not exceed a seventy-two (72) hour consecutive period.
    4. All signs associated with such sales shall be removed within twenty-four (24) hours after the conclusion of the sale.
    In commercial districts, the same requirements apply except in cases when a household wishes to hold more than two (2) free yard sales per year. In these instances, they must obtain an annual permit for $25.00 for the additional sales. Civic organizations are exempt from any of these regulations.

  13. What utilities does the Town of New Market provide?
    The Town of New Market provides water and sewer utilities. Gas, electric, phone, cable, etc are provided by private companies who can be found in the yellow pages.

  14. Does New Market maintain its streets?
    The Virginia Department of Transportation owns and maintains our streets. Town personnel and trucks, acting under the direction of VDOT, plow streets during winter weather.
