- Why do Town residents pay Town AND County taxes?
Residents are required to pay taxes in the Town and County because of the differences in services offered by both. A large percentage of your County tax dollars goes toward the county school system. The taxes you pay to the Town of New Market go toward many services, such as streetlights, police protection, sidewalk maintenance and repair, snow removal, tourism and economic development, and support of many of our non-profit organizations in town such as the rescue squad and fire department.

- I have not received a bill or I have been billed for something I do not own. What do I do?
If you should have received a tax bill and have not, please contact the Town Office to determine if there is an assessment issue or a mailing issue.
If you receive a tax bill in error, please contact the Commissioner of the Revenue’s Office at 540-459-6170. Because the Commissioner of the Revenue prepares our tax information, their office should be contacted first for any errors in billing. If you have been taxed improperly, their office will make an adjustment and forward the information to the Town Treasurer’s office where corrections will be made.

- Why do you/don’t you send my real estate tax bill to a mortgage company?
Each tax billing cycle (every six months); the Town receives written requests from mortgage companies for particular real estate tax bills. As we do not have access to a resident’s mortgage status, we honor those requests by the mortgage company. If your tax bill is supposed to go to a particular mortgage company, or is NOT supposed to be forwarded, please contact our office at 540-740-3432 and we will be happy to provide an additional copy to whomever you request.
