Come enjoy a scenic walk through our historical town with our Town Walking Tour Brochure and learn about New Market’s historical architecture and the stories behind the buildings where our downtown businesses are located. The town has a unique architectural heritage, boasting a number of buildings that reflect the simplicity and craftsmanship of its early German settlers. These early styles have blended over the years with renovations and new structures that document the town’s growth and reflect its long history of changes. The buildings on the tour are identified by a brass plaque with the corresponding number. Most are private dwellings, please respect the privacy of property owners. The tour begins on Old Cross Road at the number one location the “Abbie Henkel House” (9383 Congress St/now BB&T Bank) and proceeds North and brings you back around in a large circle ending you close to your starting point. The Virginia Museum of the Civil War (VMCW)
The Virginia Museum of the Civil War (VMCW) interprets the 1864 Battle of New Market with emphasis on the role of Virginia Military Institute Cadets and the Civil War in Virginia. Part of the Virginia Military Institute museum system which includes the Virginia Museum of the Civil War, V.M.I. Museum and the Stonewall Jackson House. The VMCW is a National Historic Landmark accredited by the American Alliance of Museums and is Virginia’s only state-owned Civil War museum. Emmy-winning film “Field of Lost Shoes” shown daily every hour in the museum theater. The General’s Store has a wide variety of regional products and an excellent book selection. Site of the state-certified Shenandoah Valley Tourist Information Center, displaying local and regional brochures.
The museum was dedicated in 1970 as a monument with its metal drum-like rotunda and stylized rifles leaning against it. Inside is a red carpet representing sacrifice and a graceful ramp signifying the forward motion of the VMI Cadets charging up Bushong’s Hill.

New Market Battlefield Military Museum
On the battlefield where two days of fighting occured, sits the impressive Greek Revival museum building. This museum features several battles from American history from before the Revolutionary War thru Vietnam,that are recounted through a myriad of original items, photos,weapons and personal stories. Also showcased is an extensive gallery of Native American items that has astounded many visitors. The museum and its collection are the culmination of one person’s passion and dedication to preserving history for future generations. Truly fascinating moments from American History are masterfully captured in the New Market Battlefield Museum.
The museum is open 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. from April 15th through October 31st. There is an admission fee, discounts available for seniors and those in the military. Children that are 6 years of age and under are FREE. We have have a gift shop with books and original artifacts for sale.

The Orientation Center of the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields National Historic District
Follow in the footsteps of Stonewall Jackson, Jedediah Hotchkiss and Jubal Early, all of whom visited the historic Strayer House (c. 1808) during the Civil War. Located at the historic crossroads in downtown New Market, the historic building features a Civil War Orientation Center with interpretive displays, artifacts, youth activities and a welcome desk where visitors can learn more about what to see and do while in the area. Be sure to watch the twelve minute film “If This Valley is Lost” which covers Stonewall Jackson’s 1862 Valley Campaign and learn the story about his legendary “foot calvary”. The Strayer House is also one of 24 stamp cancellation stations in the National Historic District. You can find the perfect memento, gift, book and more in the souvenir and book store area. Don’t forget to try the great coffee, lattes and tea, as well as the delicious food prepared fresh daily, at Jackson’s Corner Cafe & Coffee House conveniently located in the Strayer House as well.

Rouss Center for the Arts
The Rouss Center for the Arts is a live theatre which serves both the local community and surrounding counties. The theatre offers live plays, musicals, dramatic readings and more. The Rouss Center is a member of the Artisan Trail, which showcases local and Virginia-based artists and artisans in our gallery. We periodically have screenings of classic films. Shenvalee Golf Resort
The Shenvalee Golf Resort of New Market, VA features 27 PGA holes of golf on 3 separate 9 hole courses. The “Olde Course” first opened to the public in 1927 with Bobby Jones performing the honors and still maintains its original design today. A “back nine” was added in 1964, and 1992 additional holes were created, thus forming today’s “Creek” and “Miller” courses. The Shenvalee Golf Resort is one of the oldest continuously operating golf courses in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. The Shenandoah River is a tributary of the Potomac River, 55.6 miles long with two forks approximately 100 miles long each, in the U.S. states of Virginia and West Virginia.
