Overview

The Planning and Zoning Department is responsible for assisting in long range planning for the town and for the review, updating and enforcement of the zoning and subdivision ordinances.

Permits

A permit is required from the town prior starting your construction project, whether its a new house, the placement of a storage building or the installation of fence or driveway. Additional permits relating to home occupations, signs, conditional uses, temporary uses, and review of projects with the Historic Overlay District may be required. Please contact the town office prior to starting your project to make sure its in compliance with town regulations.

Zoning & Subdivision Ordinance

Zoning exists to promote the health, safety and general welfare of the public by way establishing various zoning districts with permitted uses, setbacks regulations and other similar provisions.

Comprehensive Plan

In 2012 the town adopted Planning New Market 2030. This document is meant to serve as a guiding vision of what the community wants the town to become. For more information on this document please click on the link below.

Future Growth Area Plan

In 2007 the town adopted the New Market Future Growth and Annexation Area Concept Plan. This document is meant to serve as a guide for future development through annexations of lands located adjacent to the town’s boundaries. The Town was also able to work out a Voluntary Settlement Agreement with Shenandoah County which establishes criteria that must be met when the Town pursues annexation of the lands included in the New Market Future Growth and Annexation Area Concept Plan. Interactive GIS Website

The Town of New Market has an interactive GIS website that is open to the public to use. By following the provided link, you will be able to search properties within the town by address and also have access to layers of information relating to tax records, zoning classifications, and even view aerial photographs of the town. Please note that you will need to sign in as a “guest” in order to access the site.
